Initiatives tailored to the needs of our students

A community is at its best when it invests in itself. We work with organizations and individuals raising funds to benefit our children and elevate our community.

Parents wanting more information about these programs should reach out to their child’s teacher or principal as participation is determined at the school level.

LITERACY

Page Turners

Since 2013, SPSF has paired struggling readers in Grades 1 to 3 with experienced tutors to help them progress toward grade-level reading, with improved confidence and skills.

“A child who can’t read at grade level by 3rd grade is 4x less likely to graduate than a child who does read proficiently by that time. Add poverty to the mix, and a student is 13x less likely to graduate on time than his or her proficient, wealthier peer.”

Canpotex
Cheer Crates

SPSF packages and delivers Cheer Crates to families during school breaks. When schools close, many of our students are left without the valuable supports that they receive during the school day.

Canpotex Cheer Crates continue to support families twice a year prior to school breaks.

INNOVATION

Cameco Centre of Excellence

In 2014, with the help of Cameco, Saskatchewan opened its first Centre of Excellence in Science and Mathematics at Bedford Road Collegiate. Programming focusses on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) project-based learning, with an emphasis on problem solving, creative design and teamwork. The goal of the program is to encourage students to investigate and pursue careers in Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Technology.

The on-site facility at Brightwater allows for programming throughout the school year, enabling students and their teachers to make meaningful connections to the land.

INNOVATION

Nutrien Eco-Science and Indigenous Learning Centre

In April 2013 the Nutrien Eco-Science and Indigenous Learning Centre opened its doors to Saskatoon Public Schools students.

Brightwater and the First Nation, Inuit and Métis Education Unit work together to provide middle years and high school teachers with curriculum-driven, out-of-school programming. The establishment of the learning centre provided a positive impact on the student experience. No matter the season or weather conditions, the learning centre allows students to experience native prairie throughout the school year.
