Cheer Crate Campaign

Together, we’ve delivered over 2200 Cheer Crates to Saskatoon families in 2020!

Over 630 Cheer Crates were delivered on December 16th. Thank you for your support!

SPSF packages and delivers Cheer Crates to families in need during School breaks. We ask for your support so that we can continue this initiative and help bring some cheer to even more families in need. Each $100 donation will bring a family joy and make them feel like the community cares. Your help is needed for the Cheer Crate campaign to continue to bring more smiles to those who need it most.

  • Make a cash donation
  • Make a donation of personal hygiene items, healthy activities for families, or food
  • Be creative – what are you or your business able to contribute?

The Cheer Crate campaign is partially supported by the Government of Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund and the Saskatoon Community Foundation.

When schools closed unexpectedly in March, many of our students were left without the valuable supports that they receive during the school day.  Some students receive their only food at school through the nutrition programs. On average, 4000 breakfasts, snacks, and lunches are served daily in 19 Saskatoon Public Schools to kids that really need it and who may not have food otherwise.

There are students that find school their safe place – a place where they can be a kid and receive the support of their teachers and classmates.  Phys Ed offers them a chance to exercise their body while class time exercises their minds. Without schools being open, some students were alone and there were parents unsure and unable to feed and entertain their children.

As a result, the Saskatoon Public Schools Foundation launched the Cheer Crate Campaign in late April to help address the challenges facing many families in the school division during the COVID-19 pandemic.  We wanted to do something that was uplifting and positive for our families.  Cheer Crates were delivered in May, June and September.  Through the work of community school coordinators and staff in Saskatoon Public Schools, more than 1500 families from over 30 schools were identified that would benefit from this type of support.

Cheer Crates are valued at approximately $100 each and consist of food including dairy products, eggs, bread, fruits and vegetables, cereal and canned goods as well as books, hygiene items and fun activities for the family.

Some of the comments we heard were:

“Kids haven’t had dairy since school closed, so having milk in the Cheer Crates is such a treat”

“Receiving the delivery took away some stress during these hard times. I can’t thank you enough”

“It’s really nice, especially during these times, to know that there’s a community support network. As a single parent, it’s pretty easy to feel isolated and alone in times like this.”

“The Cheer Crate is a welcome help. I was happy.  There was stuff my kids can play with, and lots of healthy food. I loved the surprise.”
